Are you born again?
Paul said in 2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do
you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.”
Examine yourself to see if Jesus lives inside of you by comparing the your life to the word of God. Look at what
the bible says about a Christian and determine whether or not you have truly been saved. What does the bible
say about those who are of God and those who are not?
The first thing you need to look at is your relationship with God. How do you recognize that you have become
His child? How do you feel about His commands? The fear of the Lord is the most recognizable part of being
born again. Those who are born again, fear God and keep His commands.
Jeremiah 32:40 “And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do
them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.”
Being convicted of your sin and trembling in fear because of God’s great power is what shows you that God is
working in your life. If you do not feel a horrible guilt and have a fear of being separated from God’s Spirit when
you commit sin or walk away from God, then you are not one of His children.
Proverbs 3:12 “For whom the LORD loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.”
Revelation 3:19 “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.”
If you are a child of God, you will be disciplined by Him as a father disciplines there kids. God will not allow you
to run around and live in sin if you are one of His children.
Hebrews 12:7-8 “If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a
father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are
illegitimate and not sons.”
The second thing you should look at is your relationship with this world. If you are born again you will not be a
part of this world because the Spirit of God causes you to seek after righteousness and despise the things of
this world. If you love the things of this world than you can have no assurance that the Spirit of God is in you.
1 John 2:15-16 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the
Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—
is not of the Father but is of the world.”
If you have an empty heart and have to use sex, alcohol, drugs or any other means to make you happy, then
you do not know God. And if you love doing these things more than you love following righteousness than you
are not born again. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. “But....” But nothing! I don’t
care what your situation is, don’t make any excuses for why you sin.
1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful,
who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of
escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
So you experience the same trials as everyone else. There’s no excuse for why you sin. You’re not tempted to
commit sin anymore than a person who is born again. The difference is, if a person is saved they overcome the
temptation, because God has given them the way out. So if you continue to fall into temptation and give into
the flesh, how can you say that you are saved? If God has not made a way that you can escape from the
temptation, and you do not have the desire to flee from sin, than you can have no assurance that you are
saved. You’re either saved from your sin or you're not. You cannot live in sin and believe that you have been
saved from it at the same time.
1 John 3:9 “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin,
because he has been born of God.”
1 John 5:18 “We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps
himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.”
This is not saying that a person who is born again will walk in perfection and never sin again, but that they will
not live in a lifestyle that continues to sin because they have been made free from sin and have a desire to
follow God’s commands. They will live their life for Christ and have a lifestyle of righteousness because they
have been born again with the Spirit of God. If they do sin, they will immediately repent and continue to live in
righteousness because they are not the old person anymore. Following righteousness is what proves that you
have come to know God, but if you live in a way that contradicts what the bible says about a true Christian than
you do not know Him.
2 John 9 “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who
abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.”
3 John 11 “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who
does evil has not seen God.”
So take a look at the way you live your life. Do you enjoy going to clubs and dancing to worldly music that is full
of sexual perversion? Do you go to the theaters and watch R rated movies that promote all kinds of immorality?
Do you cuss and tell perverted jokes with your friends? Do you get drunk or get high to have a good time? Do
you look at pornography or take part in premarital sex? Are any of these things a part of your lifestyle? If so
than you’re not walking in the truth. If you are born again you will not continue to live in sin.
1 John 1:6 “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth.”
1 John 2:3-5 “Now by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who
says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.”
If you continue living in sin than the bible says that the truth is not in you. If you’re living in sin than how can you
say that you have been saved from it? In Romans 6:2 Paul asks, “How shall we who died to sin live any longer
in it?” Can a person who has died continue to live? If you have been born again your sinful life is put to death.
Romans 6:6-7 “Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away
with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.”
Jesus said in John 8:36 “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
If your old man still lives and you are not free from sin than Christ is not in you. After being saved you will no
longer struggle to keep away from sin, because it is no longer a burden in your life and you will have no desire
to continue. You will be completely free from the power of sin and you will have a new desire for righteousness.
Romans 6:18 “Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” (KJV)
You cannot be a servant of righteousness if you’re still living in sin. Proverbs 8:13 says that the fear of the
Lord is to hate evil and the evil way. Proverbs 11:23 says that the desire of the righteous is only good. Your
desires will be righteous because you become righteous through Christ and the desires of the flesh go away.
Galatians 5:24 “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
If you are in Christ than you will not have the passions and desires you once had; everything in your life will
become new.
Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are
passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (KJV)
New music, new movies, new cloths, new activities, new attitude, a whole new style of life that proves that you
have been saved. All the unrighteousness in your life is replaced with righteousness. You no longer desire the
sinful things of this world, but you will follow after Christ and love His commands.
1 Corinthians 13:10 “But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.”
Examine yourself and determine whether or not Christ is in you. Have all the old things in your life passed? Do
you have a new desire to not be a part of this world anymore? Do you desire to live in righteousness and obey
the commands of the bible? If you do not answer yes to all these questions than you have not been born again.
If you have realized that you have not been born again than you must humble yourself to God, repent from
your sin and follow righteousness.
