Judging others
What does the bible say about judging others? Most people say that we are not to judge, but they have no idea
what they're talking about. They normally say that we are not supposed to judge, based off of their own
understanding of a scripture in Matthew 7:1 where Jesus says, “Judge not.” Well, if you read the entire verse
He says, “Judge not, that you be not judged.” He is saying that if you judge others, they are going to judge you.
He goes on to explain this in verse two. “For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the
measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” Read verses 3-5 where Jesus is telling you that you are not
to judge others for committing sin if you are also guilty of committing sin. Then He goes on to explain that by
removing the sin in your life, you will be able to remove the sins of others.
Matthew 7:3-5 “And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your
own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in
your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove
the speck from your brother’s eye.”
Some people use Romans chapter 14 to say that we are not to judge others, but Paul is not talking about
sinners. Paul is telling Christians not to judge each other, and he uses an example of those who eat meat and
those who do not.
Romans 14:1-3 “Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one
believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who
does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him.”
God has received him, meaning they are saved and their salvation is not threatened whether they eat meat or
not. So Paul tells us not to judge them. It would be like if you were judging someone for not praying as often as
you do or not doing as many good works as you do. You should not judge others for things that do not concern
their salvation, and this is what Paul was teaching in Romans chapter 14.
As a Christian, not only do you have the right, but you are commanded by God to warn others of their sin so
that they may come to know the truth. When you preach the law to someone, you’re not casting stones at them,
your just giving them the word of God. If you tell someone that they are in sin and need to repent, you are just
doing your job as a Christian.
Jesus said in Luke 17:3 “Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he
repents, forgive him.”
In Titus 3:13 Paul says, “Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.”
Titus 2:15 “Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:14 “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded,
support the weak, be patient toward all men.”
2 Timothy 2:24-25 “And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in
humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they
may know the truth.”
These things are not only our responsibility, but commands from God. We must go out and preach the truth so
that people may be saved.
