Pharisee
A Pharisee was a member of a Jewish group of people who followed religious traditions and the Mosaic law. They believed that
they had salvation through holding onto traditions and practicing religious deeds.

The first thing that comes to most people's mind  when they think of a Pharisee, is a person who judges others. Judging does
not make a person a Pharisee. To read more about judging

The Pharisee's were very  judgmental, but it was not out of love or according to God's word.

In
Matthew 15:2 the Pharisees came to Jesus saying, "Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash
not their hands when they eat bread."

This is a tradition of man. The Pharisee's believed that you must keep these traditions to be saved. They judged others based
off their belief's, and it was not for the sake of those they judged, but rather to be recognised for their own self-righteousness.

Jesus said in Matthew 15:8-9 "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their
heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

Jesus said in Matthew 5:20 "For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes
and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven."

Jesus said to the Pharisees in
Matthew 23:33 "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?"

A person cannot be righteous through traditions or religious works. However, the Pharisee's took pride in their works and were
not humble before God, recognizing their sin or their inability to be saved by their works.

Jesus talks to His disciples about the Pharisees in
Matthew 23:5 and says to them, "But all their works they do for to be seen of
men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments."

In Matthew 6:2-4 Jesus said, "Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do
in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when
thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which
seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

In Matthew 6:5-6 Jesus said, "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in
the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But
thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy
Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."

In Matthew 6:16-18 Jesus said, "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their
faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint
thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which
seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly."

Jesus in Matthew 23:25-27 "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of
the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and
platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited
sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness."

We must not be like the Pharisee. We must be humble before God and not take any pride in the things we do for Him. We must
acknowledge that we are only made righteous through Jesus Christ. None of our works can earn us salvation. To learn more
