Profanity
What does the Bible say about cussing or swearing?

James 5:12 “But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let
your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.”

That pretty much sums it up right there. We are not to swear about anything. Simply let your “Yes” be “Yes” and your “No,” “No
."

Leviticus 19:12 “And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.”

You are not to swear to God or use the name of Jesus as a cuss word by saying it in vain. These are things that many professing
Christians do and think nothing of them, because they do not realize that they are sinful.

Jesus said in Matthew 12:36-37, “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in
the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it
may minister grace unto the hearers.”

Colossians 3:8 “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”

While the use of cuss words may not be corrupt, they are often used in corrupt ways. They are used in filthy communication, such
as perverted or sexual jokes that are not righteous. These words are often used against others to make fun of or call names,
which would also be sinful. We are to speak words that show love and that edify.
