How do I deal with rejection?
Many people do not want to listen to the truth, and they may reject you and cause you to feel like giving up on witnessing all
together. You have to remember that YOU are not going to save anybody. Do not put yourself in a position where you think it is up
to you to get a person saved. God is the only one who can change a person’s heart. When you preach the word of God, it is God
working through you to speak to the hearts of those who hear. It is God who will do the work of saving a person.
2 Corinthians 4:5-7 “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For
God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory
of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God,
and not of us.”
You are going to experience many troubles while witnessing to people, but you must continue to reach the lost at any cost.
Unfortunately, this cost can be very painful. People will say things to hurt you; they will mock you and make fun of you for your
beliefs. You will be treated badly for following Jesus, but this is all part of being a Christian.
Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:12 “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
John the apostle said in 1 John 3:13 not to marvel that the whole world hates you. When you do God’s will, worldly people are
going to cuss you out, make fun of you, call you names, and spread rumors and lies about you, but do not worry about the
persecution that will come upon you, because you know you will have your reward.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil
against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the
prophets which were before you.”
1 Peter 4:16 “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.”
You will anger people and probably lose friends in order to try to reach them, but taking a risk of losing a friendship may be what
it takes to save that person from hell. If you do lose a friend, just remember that you planted a seed. They might reject you or
even hate you, but they have that knowledge of truth that you have given them. It might take time for it to grow into understanding.
It could take weeks, months, or even years for them to come to the reality that they need Christ in their life, but the most important
part is planting that seed of truth. Nobody ever said it would be easy to witness to people. As hard as it is to lose friends and
anger family members, you must give them the gospel so that they might one day be saved. Do not worry about what you will go
through; God is always with you.
2 Corinthians 4:8-10 “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but
not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of
Jesus might be made manifest in our body.”
When I began to witness, I knew that God was with me and I was not worried about the persecution I would go through. I was
willing to go through the worst in order to reach the lost, but I still had fear. It was not being afraid of anything that would happen
to me physically, but emotionally. This was my fear; that I would anger my friends if I preached to them as I did others and they
would turn on me. But I realized my love was selfish. If I was to love them the way God wanted me to, I had to show them the
truth no matter what the cost.
One night I thought to myself, “Why ignore my calling to witness to them just so I can be friends with them in this life, when
knowing that if they never hear the truth I won’t see them in the life to come?” I could not go on letting my selfishness keep me
from witnessing to the ones I love. Unfortunately, I have lost many friends, but I have planted a seed of truth and now these
people are in the hands of my Lord Who is faithful.
1 Corinthians 3:7 “So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.”
It is not up to me or you to get a person saved. We just have to preach the gospel to them and the Holy Spirit will do the rest.
Even though it is hard when people rebel and run from the truth, you must remember that after you have planted the seed, it is in
God’s hands.
Romans 9:16 “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
I remember a girl that I witnessed to online. She did not want to listen to the truth at all, and our entire conversation was me
giving her the word of God and her refusing to believe it. However, a few months later I got an e-mail from her telling me she was
thankful for what I had said to her, and she was now living a better life. You see, God changes the person after they have heard
the gospel. We must give them the word of God so that they can be saved.
