Have you truly repented?
Jesus said in Luke 13:3 that unless you repent you shall all perish. Repenting does not mean to ask Jesus to
forgive you. “Hey man, I thought you stopped cussing?“ “Oh, I’m repenting from it.“ “You’ve been repenting
from it for a year now and you’re still doing it.” “But I ask for forgiveness every night when I pray“ This is what
repentance is to most professing Christians and they do not realize they‘re lost. If you haven’t stopped
committing the sin you are repenting from than you haven’t repented from it. Repenting means to feel such
sorrow because of your sin that you turn from it and never go back.
Romans 6:21 “What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed?”
Are the things that you are repenting from things that you feel ashamed of? Things that you are truly sorry for?
Or are you just repenting from something because the bible says not to do it? You must feel in your heart that
you have sinned against God and have a sorrow that causes you to want to repent.
2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the
sorrow of the world produces death.”
You don’t repent just because you want forgiveness, but because you have sinned against God. You have a
sorrow that causes you to repent from your sin. Like a child who comes to their mom crying because they know
they did something they knew was wrong and because of their love for their mom they felt sorry. This is godly
sorrow, but the sorrow of this world is in vain. It’s like the kid that just wants to act sorry so they might get ten
minutes taken off their time out, or get grounded for only a week instead of two weeks. This is not true sorrow
and cannot lead to true repentance. You’re doing nothing but a work of self righteousness.
If you do not feel that you have truly repented, you must humble yourself to God and ask that He would grant
you repentance through the knowledge of sin from His word. Read through the commandments of God and let
the Holy Spirit work conviction in your life so that you can repent.
Paul said in Romans 7:13 “Sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so
that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.”
Once you have the knowledge of sin and have been convicted, having godly sorrow, then you can repent from
your sin and follow righteousness. But if the sin you are repenting from does not cause you sorrow or grief
than the Holy Spirit has not convicted you and you are working out repentance by your own self righteousness.
James 4:6-10 “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore submit to God. Resist the
devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you
sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned
to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
